Workshop Title: Building Workforce Resilience to Stress and Trauma
Date: October 3, 2019
Overview: Human services workers, including those working in behavioral health, housing and homelessness services, child welfare, probation, other first responders, and many others are exposed to stressors, including primary and/or secondary traumatic stressors during the course of their work. Posttraumatic effects are perfectly expectable responses to multiple, highly stressful experiences. We will review the risks for suffering from the effects of stressors and traumatic stressors for both frontline workers and also for supervisors and managers. We will cover what can be traumatic, who is at risk and how, what warning signs to look out for in oneself, coworkers, and supervisees, and what responses are helpful in the workplace and at home. These strategies include leveraging compassion satisfaction, vicarious resilience, and the potential of posttraumatic growth. We will review and design ways to start decreasing unnecessary exposure and increasing resilience to stressors. We will also consider when it is appropriate to seek additional care and support beyond the workplace.
This workshop will include presentation of information, followed by case-based activities for participants in small groups or teams, with instructor-facilitated debriefing. Participants will have the opportunity to design strategies for their work environments and the workshop will close with a large group discussion. Questions are welcome throughout the workshop.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to
- Distinguish between primary and secondary stress and trauma exposure
