The Culture of Poverty

The purpose of this training will be to provide those servicing clients from low-income families, a better understanding of the culture of poverty that often predisposes them to choices and behaviors that negatively impact their lives. Attitudes about work, education, family priorities and even social service, will be examined to enlighten care-givers about the cultural competencies necessary in serving this population. Presenter: Donald E. Sheffield, Ed.D. Donald E. Sheffield has a BA from Geneva College, a master’s from Slippery Rock University, and a doctorate in higher education from Penn State University. He spent most of his career in higher education with the last twenty-six years at Penn State University until his retirement in 2002. Prior to retirement, he served as Director of Diversity Outreach for the Office of the Outreach and Cooperative Extension. Dr. Sheffield developed field programs to improve the multicultural education of undergraduate students for Penn State.
