Foster Grandparent Program

Options: Vision, Mission and/or Purpose of Organization

PIC was named the sponsor for the Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania (FGP) in June 2014, continuing a long tradition of strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement to the region. FGP spans across Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Fayette, and Washington counties. Funded through the National Corporation for Community Service's Senior Corps, the FGP program provides volunteers a way to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities.

History of Organization:

FGP volunteers support academic and social-emotional needs by providing one-on-one attention as role models, mentors, and tutors to children and youth with special and exceptional needs. The volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours per week and often maintain an ongoing relationship, intensive relationship with the children and youth served for a year or longer.

The Senior Corps Foster Grandparent Program will help find just the right opportunity for you, whether you want to ...
•Provide guidance and mentoring to young people striving to succeed
•Tutor children from kindergarten through 12th grade
•Offer one-to-one support and counseling to struggling youth
•Open troubled youth's eyes to their potential

Since 1965, Foster Grandparents have volunteered in:
•public and private schools
•shelters and foster agencies
•before-school and afterschool programs
•Head Start, preschool, and daycare centers
•mental, developmental, rehabilitation, and correctional facilities

To be a foster grandparent through our program, an individual must:
1.be 55 years of age or older,
2.be a lawful resident of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Fayette, or Washington counties,
3.be determined by a physical examination to be capable to serve, and
