Carnegie Free Library - Beaver Falls
Options: Vision, Mission and/or Purpose of OrganizationThe Vision of the Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls is to inspire
and empower lifelong learning and the exchange of knowledge.
It all started when a group of dedicated citizens, along with the local school board,
decided that they wanted a library for their community. Thanks to their perseverance and a $50,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie,
their dream became a reality. The Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls opened in Sept 1903.
Once housing a public auditorium and the school district's administrative offices, the Library has
undergone many changes over the years. These changes have included renovations of the
roof, steps, and facade; installation of an elevator; a new circulation desk. Two other organizations are housed in the library, they are
the Beaver Falls Historical Society Museum
and the Larry Bruno Foundation Hall of Achievement.
Now, 113 years after its dedication, the Library continues to offer a wide range of free programs and services for its patrons. Circulated materials have expanded over time to include
much more than just printed sources such as books, magazines, and newspapers. Videos and
audio books are in constant demand. E-books and E-audio resources can be downloaded from
the Library without even entering its doors. Today, a number of activity sessions such as
children's story hours and adult book discussions are provided. Computers for patrons are
always available for research, job searches, social networking, and internet classes. Challenging
economic conditions have made the need for library services even greater. With the demise of
many book stores, the Library has grown as a community center and gathering place. Patrons
choose to visit the Library for a multitude of reasons and it has always been there to meet their
varying needs.
The Library will continue to evolve as it blends living history with modern technology. It is
the intent of the Board of Trustees to maintain the beauty of the building and its significance to
the region; it is also resolved to continue to provide existing and expanded learning
opportunities while keeping pace with information resources of the future. The Carnegie Free
Library will stand as the historical landmark on Seventh Avenue. The preservation of the building
is critical to the vitality and stability of the community and its people. A restored Beaver Falls
Library will serve as a Learning Community Center/Knowledge Exchange that offers traditional
and modern programs and services, attracting an ever broadening spectrum of users and
advocates.
This is Beaver County's first
library and is placed on the National Historic Register.
