Parent Organization

Literacy Pittsburgh

Options: Vision, Mission and/or Purpose of Organization

Mission: Better lives through learning.

Vision: A more inclusive and productive community driven by access to education.

Purpose:Through one-to-one tutoring and small class settings, we offer a safe and supportive environment for adults to acquire reading, writing and math skills, prepare for high school equivalency exams, and gain skills to transition to jobs or college. We teach English as a second language to immigrants and refugees. Our programs have a significant economic impact on the region by taking students from learning to earning and helping them gain economic self-sufficiency. Our students become better parents, workers, and citizens.

History of Organization:

In 1976, Mary Yardumian started what was then the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council (GPLC) with a group of volunteers from the Pittsburgh area and ran the organization from her home. In 1982, when the demand for instruction became too great for the volunteers to handle, the organization became incorporated as a nonprofit organization with a board of directors and professional staff. On May 2, 2018 the organization name was changed to Literacy Pittsburgh. On July 1, 2018 Literacy Pittsburgh expanded its adult basic educational services to Beaver County.
