Options: Vision, Mission and/or Purpose of Organization

The Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, a member of Catholic Health East and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, is an extension of the Catholic health care ministry to all people in Southwestern Pennsylvania. We carry out our mission through our core values and with a commitment to being a transforming, healing presence within the communities we serve. We stand with the vulnerable of our communities in assessing need, collaborating with others, providing services that address the whole person, and advocating for social change.

History of Organization:

The Sisters of Mercy came to Pittsburgh in 1843 to minister to the poor, sick, and uneducated. In 1847, they opened Mercy Hospital, the first permanent hospital in Pittsburgh and the first Mercy Hospital in the world. The Sisters of Mercy sold the hospital to UPMC in December 2007. Today, Pittsburgh Mercy Health System is one of the region's largest health and social service nonprofit organizations. We assist persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, people who are homeless, abused, and otherwise disenfranchised. Our services include A Child's Place at Mercy, McAuley Ministries, Mercy Behavioral Health, Mercy Community Health, Mercy Intellectual Disabilities Services, Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program, Operation Safety Net, and Pittsburgh Mercy Family Health Center.

Options: Accreditations and Licenses

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and Department of Health license our facilities. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitiation Facilities (CARF) accredits several of our programs, including crisis intervention and crisis stabilization services.
