Mt. Pleasant offers childcare services and Early Learning Programs Monday through Friday from 6:00am – 6:00pm for infants through kids twelve years of age. We have outstanding Pre-school and Pre-K programs, a summer Day Camp program available for school age children, and before and after school programs. We are a member of the Pennsylvania Keystone Stars Program and currently have a “Star One Rating.” Our curriculum is Christian based and we view this as a ministry and outreach to these children and our community. If you need Daycare, Pre-School or Pre-K services/programs or know someone who does, send them our way!

History of Organization:

It was during the summer of 1876 some thirty members of the United Presbyterian Church of Hookstown and the Service United Presbyterian Church of Raccoon Township united in erecting a building on the J.A. Ingles farm, Route 18, Raccoon Township, in which to worship.

When the building was completed, Rev. D.W. Carson, pastor or the Service Church congregation, was asked to serve the new group.

At a meeting of the Presbytery in June 1877, a petition for a new organization named the Mt. Pleasant Congregation was granted. In August of the same year, the organization was completed with the installation of elders: Alex Ewing, Elisha Thornburg, A.G. Ewing, and J.A. Christy. Alex Ewing was appointed clerk of session and A.G. Ewing, Sunday School superintendent.

On August 21, 1900 a fire destroyed the building; however, most of the pews and pulpit furniture was not harmed. The congregation quickly organized and rebuilt the burned out structure.

For years the congregation shared a pastor with the Service Church congregation and then with Hanover United Presbyterian Church, Hanover Township. The first full-time pastor was Reverend Richard Madsen in 1955. Twenty-one pastors have served at Mt. Pleasant, the last five being Rev. D. Davis, Rev. D.R. Reinard, Rev. C.R. (Rob) Philips, Dr. R.H. Phillips, and Rev. Rich Herbster.

During the tenure of Rev. Rob Philips, new property (39 acres) was purchased and destined for a new church building. In June 1997 construction began; and for the first six weeks we were aided by Rev. Don Russell and volunteers from the Methodist Volunteers in Missions program, which included two young ladies from Lithuania. Many members of our congregation worked with the volunteers, and for countless hours over the next two years with Lennie Miller, who took over in August 1997, as our general contractor, supervising the construction.

February 22, 1999 we held our first service in the sanctuary, which was the last part of the new church building to be completed. A dedication service was held on May 22, 1999.

Since 1877, Mt. Pleasant Church has served to meet the spiritual needs of the residents of Raccoon Township through the pastors and the congregations ministries.
